2913 Hal

Hal Ashby's obsessive genius led to an unprecedented string of Oscar-winning classics, including Harold and Maude, Shampoo and Being There. But as contemporaries Coppola, Scorsese and Spielberg rose to blockbuster stardom in the 1980's Ashby's uncompromising nature played out as a cautionary tale of art versus commerce.

In HAL, director Amy Scott offers a fascinating biography of the filmmaker, that examines his life and work through interviews with Jon Voight, Rosanna Arquette, Beau Bridges, Robert Towne, Jane Fonda, and Judd Apatow, and many others.

“Scott has dug very deep to unearth a great deal of valuable information in the way of diverse commentary and visual documentation, the end result being a very keen appreciation of a key figure from one of Hollywood’s most fascinating and rewarding eras.” – Hollywood Reporter

If there's still the sense that Ashby isn't as sanctified as American New Wave stalwarts Coppola or Scorsese, Amy Scott's breezy tribute of a documentary is out to correct that oversight.
The Wrap

A most welcome reassessment of one of the most important figures in 1970s Hollywood.
